The Argentine Black and White Tegu is the largest lizard commonly kept as a pet, with adult males reaching four feet or more in total length and weighing upward of fifteen pounds. Native to the grasslands, forests, and savannas of South America — primarily Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay — these powerful, intelligent reptiles have earned a devoted following among experienced keepers. Tegus are often described as the most dog-like of all lizards; they can be leash-trained, will seek out their owners for attention, and have demonstrated the ability to learn their names and respond to basic cues. Their care, however, is not trivial: adults require very large enclosures of at least eight feet long by four feet wide, a varied omnivorous diet of whole prey, lean meats, eggs, fruits, and vegetables, and a proper brumation cycle during winter months. They also possess strong jaws and sharp claws, so confident, experienced handling is essential. For keepers with the space, budget, and dedication, a well-socialized Tegu is one of the most rewarding reptile companions available.
