Ball Python

Python regius

The Ball Python is the most popular pet snake in the world, prized for its calm temperament and stunning variety of color morphs. Native to the grasslands and open forests of West and Central Africa, these heavy-bodied constrictors rarely exceed five feet in length, making them a manageable size for most keepers. Ball Pythons earn their common name from the defensive posture of curling into a tight ball when stressed. With hundreds of selectively bred morphs available — from classic wild-type browns and golds to striking piebalds, bananas, and blue-eyed leucistics — there is a Ball Python to suit every taste. They are generally docile, tolerate regular handling well, and have straightforward husbandry requirements that make them an ideal first snake.
