The Panther Chameleon is widely regarded as the most colorful chameleon species and one of the most spectacular reptiles on Earth. Native to the lowland forests of northern and eastern Madagascar, these arboreal lizards display jaw-dropping locale-specific color variations — Ambilobe males may show vivid reds, blues, and greens, while Nosy Be males are famous for their intense turquoise, and Sambava males display rich orange and red hues. Males are the more colorful sex, reaching 15 to 20 inches in total length, while females are smaller and typically display more muted pinks, peaches, and tans. Like all chameleons, Panthers require meticulous husbandry: a tall, well-ventilated screen enclosure, precise temperature gradients, strong UVB lighting, an automated misting or drip system for hydration, and a diet of gut-loaded, calcium-dusted insects. They are sensitive to stagnant air, over-handling, and stress from seeing their own reflection or other chameleons.
