Russian Tortoise

Testudo horsfieldii

The Russian Tortoise is a compact, hardy tortoise that has become one of the most popular chelonian pets. Native to the arid steppes of Central Asia — from Afghanistan through Iran, Pakistan, and into Russia and China — these small tortoises typically reach just 6 to 10 inches in shell length. They are active, curious animals that enjoy burrowing and exploring, and they do well in both indoor enclosures and predator-proof outdoor pens in warmer climates. Russian Tortoises are strict herbivores with a diet centered on dark leafy greens, weeds like dandelion and clover, and occasional vegetables. They are one of the few commonly kept tortoises that remain a manageable size for apartment and house dwellers alike. With proper care including adequate UVB lighting and a calcium-rich diet, they are remarkably long-lived.
